Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. From 50 to 65 is (65 - 50) / 50 x 100 = 30%.
How do I increase a number by a percentage?
Multiply it by 1 plus the percentage as a decimal. Increasing 80 by 25% is 80 x 1.25 = 100.
Why is going from 50 to 100 a 100% increase but 100 to 50 only a 50% decrease?
Percent change is measured against the starting value. Doubling adds 100% of 50. Halving removes 50% of 100. The same gap of 50 is a different share of a different starting point.
What is the difference between a percent and a percentage point?
A rate rising from 4% to 5% is a rise of 1 percentage point, but a 25% increase, because 1 is a quarter of 4.
Can a percentage increase be more than 100%?
Yes. Any new value more than double the old value is an increase over 100%. From 20 to 70 is (70 - 20) / 20 x 100 = 250%.
